Sessa-Takuma: The Power of the Cut: Part 1

Welcome to the official launch of our summer journey. Over the next 12 weeks, our entire dojo is diving deep into an ancient warrior philosophy: Sessa-Takuma (切磋琢磨).
In the ancient world, this phrase described the exact process a master craftsman used to transform a rough, ordinary stone into a priceless, polished gemstone. But before the stone can be ground down, carved, or polished, it must endure the first, most definitive act of creation: The Cut.
This is 切 Setsu.
You Cannot Polish a Compromise
Every great achievement starts not with adding something new, but with cutting something away.
To build elite focus, you have to cut away distractions.
To build an elite technique, you have to cut away lazy habits.
To build an elite life, you have to cut away the excuses that hold you back.
Setsu is the ultimate act of decision. The word decision actually comes from a Latin word that means "to cut off." When you decide to become a martial artist or when you decide to chase any high-level goal, you are making a clean break from your past self. You are cutting off the retreat options. There is no plan B.
The Illusion of "Trying"
A lot of people come to the dojo to "try" martial arts. But you cannot "try" a cut. You either cut the stone, or you don't.
When you step onto the mat this week, I don't want you to just "try" to have a good class. I want you to make a definitive cut. Cut out the outside noise. Cut out the exhaustion from your day. Cut out the negative voice in your head that says you can't push harder. When you bow onto the mat, your focus should be razor-sharp, leaving everything else outside the dojo doors.
⚡️ The Weekly Challenge: "The Razor's Edge"
This week, we lay the foundation for the entire summer. We start by clearing the canvas.
Dojo Challenge: Identify one "lazy habit" you’ve allowed into your training (a soft chamber, dropping your guard when tired, or a weak kiai). This week, make a clean break. Cut it out entirely. Every single repetition must be executed with 100% intentionality.
Home/School Challenge: What is the number one distraction stealing your time or focus at home? (Video games, mindless scrolling, procrastination?) This week, practice Setsu. Cut that distraction in half and replace that time with something that sharpens your mind or helps your family.
A masterpiece isn't born from what you keep; it's born from what you are willing to cut away.
Rise Together. Sharpen Each Other.

Before a master craftsman can reshape, carve, or polish a rough stone into a masterpiece, they must make the first, most definitive move: The Cut.
This is Setsu (切)—the ultimate act of decision.
